بطل الرواية، فيرغسون، وهو منسِّق موسيقى مخضرم من أصول أفريقيَّة-أميركية، بذاكرة صوتيَّة عجيبة، يسافر من الولايات المتَّحدة إلى برلين فى ألمانيا، فى العام 1989، تماماً فى الفترة التى تسبق انهيار جدار برلين، فى رحلة بحثٍ عن "ذا شوا" الموسيقى العظيم المختفي، فى مسعى لتحقيق ذاته من خلال إبداع ضربة موسيقية كاملة.
يخلق بيتى عوالم خاصة وفريدة، وشخصيات هذه العوالم تكاد تكون أسطورية، كما هى شخصياته فى معظم أعماله، أول هذى الشخصيات البطل نفسه الذى يعمل ساعى فونوغراف آلي، ويملك ذاكرة صوتية عجيبة، وهناك أيضاً عصبة الموسيقيين، زملاؤه المعروفون بالذين يحكون ذقونهم طوال الوقت، توجد أيضاً الشخصية الظريفة لرجل وزارة أمن الدولة فى ألمانيا الشرقية، الذى يسجل موسيقى "ذا شوا" على أفلام خلاعية (منها فيلم يظهر فيه بنفسه وهو يضاجع دجاجة!)، لأجل المحافظة على الإرث الموسيقى لفنّان مختفٍ عد أسطورة زمانه فى موسيقا الجاز.
يبدو سعى البطل إلى تأليف قطعته الموسيقية سعى العاجز إلى أن يلتقى "ذا شوا" آخر الأمر، ويتمكن معه، بمساعدة باقى أبطال الرواية، من إقامة جدار صوتى يقسم مدينة برلين من جديد، ويعيد الفصل إليها (سيعيد فكرة فصل المدينة فى روايته التالية (الخائن)، الصادرة باللغة العربية عن منشورات الجمل فى العام 2018)، حينها فقط يحقق البطل، بإلهام من "ذا شوا"، ضربته الموسيقية، مقطوعته الكاملة.
