هذا الكتاب يبحث عن حقيقة الخط الوهمي الفاصل/ الواصل بين "الشفاهية" و"الكتابية". لهذا طرح الكاتب هذا السؤال على أرضية الثقافة العربية في ضوء ما شهدته العلاقات بين "الشفاهية" و"الكتابية" من تطور. ثم قام باستكشاف جوانب اختلاف السرد الشفاهي عن السرد الكتابي بالتطبيق على السيرة الهلالية في الدلتا المصرية برواية الشاعر فتحي سليمان" ورواية "مراعي القتل" للكاتب الروائي المصري فتحي إمبابي. لقد اشتغل الباحث على رواية الشاعر فتحي سليمان للسيرة الهلالية تطبيقيا على ست وثلاثين ساعة تسجيل، هي كل ما استطاع الباحث الحصول عليه من الأسواق وشركات الكاسيت التجارية في تسعينيات القرن العشرين، للوقوف على كيفيات تشكيل عناصر البناء السردي في رواية فتحي سليمان الشفاهية للسيرة الهلالية، وهى لحسن الحظ رواية شفاهية تم تسجيلها في اتصال حي مع الجمهور؛ سواء في أفراح أو في غيرها من المناسبات. كما قام الباحث بدراسة واحدة من أهم الروايات في تاريخ الرواية العربية وهي "مراعي القتل" التي قدم فيها فتحي إمبابي تغريبة العمال المصريين إلى ليبيا في الربع الأخير من القرن الماضي والتي كتبها مؤلفها بالعامية المصرية مبرهنا بذلك على اقتراحه اللغوي ــ الذي ألحقه بالرواية ــ بتيسير العربية من خلال ما أسماه ب "مطابقة المكتوب للمنطوق".
