تدور أجواء الرواية في عالم شعوري مكثف، بين رومانسية إلى حد الجنون وصراعات نفسية، وتأملات في الحياة والموت. ورغم أن الأحداث تدور في زمن بعيد إلا أن كل سطر فيها يمكن إسقاطه على الواقع المعاش عربيا، خصوصا هيمنة القوى الدينية وصراعاتها، وتحالفاتها السياسية، والتي يروح ضحية لها أجمل زهور “أورنارا” بلاد النهر بالسيريانية. معظم الأسماء في الرواية هي سيريانية وهي اللغة السورية القديمة ولغة العديد من الكتب المقدسة. وقد اختار الكاتب اسم إلهة الموسيقى والغناء “أورنينا” للبطلة الشابة والجميلة ذات الصوت الملائكي، والتي سنتعرف عليها من خلال رسالة اعتذار يكتبها أبوها “أوديشو” المبشر وهو على حافة الموت داخل مقبرته التي أعدها وزينها بالرسوم صديقه “نوربا” الرسام والذي يتخصص في رسم وجوه الموتى. وفي هذه الأجواء المظلمة داخل نتعرف على سيرة الأبطال، وعلى الخلفية السياسية والدينية والاجتماعية في أورنارا، وعلى العديد من الأفكار البسيطة التي يعاد طرحها بطريقة جديدة، تجعلنا نعيد النضر فيما نعرفه عنها.
