This book represents a thorough faunistic study of the 139 species of butterfly known to occur in the Republic of Lebanon. Introductory chapters deal with the country, its people, geology, climate and flora, as well as the distribution of butterflies in the varied ecological zones and the zoo-geographical origins of a complex fauna. In addition to summarizing the extensive literature on the Lebanese Rhopalocera, which has appeared over the last 100years, the author has studied a large number of private and public collections. However, it is his own observations in the course of hundreds of field trips which form the major part of this work. Most species are illustrated in the 16 plates in full colour which depict more than 200 individual specimens. No other area of the Western parts of Asia has been the subject of so comprehensive a study. This book is a must for the nature lover in Lebanon as well as for any serious student of the butterflies of the Mediterranean or Western Asia. a selected bibliography of 150 items is appended.
