حينما كُنتُ صغيرًا أحببتُ الخرائط، وكُنتُ أنظر ساعاتٍ إلى أمريكا الجنوبيَّة وإفريقيا وأستراليا فأضيع في أمجاد الاستكشاف. كانت هناك فراغات كثيرة على الأرض في ذلك الوقت، فإذا ما بدا لي أن إحداها تدعوني لزيارتها (وقد كانت كلها كذلك) أشرتُ إليها بإصبعي وقُلتُ عندما أكبر سأذهب إلى هناك. كان القُطب الشَّمالي أحد هذه الأماكن على ما أذكر، لكنني لم أذهب إلى هناك حتى الآن، ولن أُحاول ذلك فيما بعد. لقد فَقَدَ سحره. كانت بعض هذه الأماكن مُبعثرةً حول خطِّ الاستواء، وفي بُقع مُختلفة أُخرى شماله، أو جنوبه، ولقد ذهبت إلى بعضها و... حسنًا لن نتكلَّم عن ذلك، لكنَّ هناك مكانًا، وكان الأكبر والأكثر فراغًا أحببته.
