"هنينغ مانكل" كاتبٌ وروائي سويدي اشتهر برواياته البوليسية المتنوعة والتي تعتمد معظمها على اختلاق شخصية يتعلق بها القارئ، هي شخصية "كورت فالاندر" مفتش الشرطة الذي يترتب عليه كل مرة فك طلاسم جريمة أو قضية تأخذ الروائي إلى العوالم المختلفة التي يريد الذهاب إليها، للتحرّي والبحث في القضايا المتنوعة التي تهمّه.
في هذه الرواية البوليسية والتي هي الثانية من هذه السلسلة المشّوقة والمحبوكة العناصر، والتي تعتمد بالإضافة إلى التشويق والإثارة اللذين تتطلبهما أجواء الرواية البوليسة، على مواضيع هامة في مناطق ساخنة من أوروبا، كالموضوع الذي تبحثه هذه الرواية، وهو الأوضاع السياسية والاجتماعية في لتوانيا التي كانت تتخبط في فوضى مرحلة الانتقال وتحلم بالاستقلال السياسي عن موسكو، في مرحلة بدأ فيها اهتزاز الاتحاد السوفياتي يبدو للعلن.
يكتشف المفتش، جريمة قتل مزدوجة لشخصين وجدت جثتيهما داخل طوافة عالقة بين الصخور، تتقاذفها الأمواج على شاطئ البحر، ويتعرف بسرعة على هويتهما كمجرمين من لتوانيا تابعين للمافيا الروسية، وعلى صناعة الطوافة اليوغسلافية الأصل، والتي لا يستعملها إلا السوفيات وأعوانهم. من أجل إجراء التحقيقات اللازمة ومعرفة الدافع وراء الجريمة، يذهب المفتش ذو النزعة الإنسانية إلى "ريغا" في لتوانيا، ويدخل تعقيدات هذا العالم المشحون والمتحول فيتعرف على ظواهره وبواطنه وعلى مفاصل محرّكاته، وعلى العقيد "ليبه" الذي لن يلبث إلا أن يقتل بدوره لاحقاً.
يظهر المفتش فالاندر في هذه الرواية بعيداً عن سلطته، قصيّاً عن مهاراته في بلد لا يعرفه، وبمواجهة خصوم وأعداء شرسين ومتمرسين في ألاعيبهم ومؤامراتهم ودسائسهم ومخابراتهم.
