لما كان من حرص المسلمين عمومًا، والصحابة والتابعين على وجه الخصوص، على رواية أقوال النبي والتنافس في ضبطها، وكذا رواية أفعاله وأخلاقه وأحواله وشمائله، على الهيئة التي تزخر بها المصنفات الحديثية، كانت لنسبتهم بعض الأقوال أو الأفعال إلى السنة النبوية أو إلى مطلق السنة، دلالة مميزة عن باقي المرويات، من هنا نبعت فكرة هذا الكتاب الذي يتمحور حول دراسة "ما نسبه الصحابة والتابعون إلى السنة"، والذي نقف من خلاله على هذا الصنف من المرويات التي أثبتها كبار المحدثين في مصنفاتهم، مع دراسة مناهج علماء الحديث وعلماء الأصول من المذاهب الأربعة في النظر إليها والتعامل معها، إضافة إلى تحليل "أثرها في الفقه الإسلامي"، من خلال بيان مدى اعتماد الفقهاء عليها في بناء أو تقرير الأحكام الشرعية.
