لذا كان مرض الجذام منحوتًا علينا، ليس جسديًّا فقط وإنما ذهنيًّا أيضًا، وأحيانًا يشوِّه حالتنا العقلية بطريقة مشابهة لجروح ظهور وأكتاف المجذومين الغائرة، لا يمكنك توقع أن تؤدي هذه الظروف إلى اللطف والتفاؤل، ولكن هذه الفضائل كانت موجودة بلا شك في مستعمرة الجذام أيضًا، ربما جعلها القبح الجسدي أسهل على ذلك الآخر، وأكثر تأصلًا وعمقًا في الطبيعة البشرية عن الظهور.
