Y en segundo lugar, una angustiada reflexión poética El hilo conductor de esta novela es la conversación que el narrador mantiene con el anciano conde de Brandly (viajero impenitente, supérstite de una cultura en desaparición) que cuenta desde un café parisino la historia atroz y sublime a un tiempo, de su relación con el arqueólogo mexicano Hugo Heredia y su hijo Víctor. Y en segundo lugar, una angustiada reflexión poética en la que se agolpan las principales obsesiones del gran narrador mexicano, referidas todas a la búsqueda de la identidad, ya sea a través del tiempo subjetivo y laberíntico de la memoria en lucha contra el olvido, o a través de los grandes y devastadores influjos de la Historia.
