تدور فكرة الكتاب الأساسية حول دور الدين في حياة المصريين وتحوله من حالة ثورية إلى حالة استسلام بالقضاء والقدر والمكتوب، وكيف تُفرض في الوقت نفسه حالة من التدين السلبي من خلال تعبيرات ثقافية في البرامج التليفزيونية والجرائد والكتب والأفلام والمسلسلات والحضرات الصوفية. وكيف يقاوم بعض المصريين كل هذا، وكيف يعبرون عن مقاومتهم في تعبيرات ثقافية مضادة للسلطة السياسية أو الدينية.
يهتم الكتاب أيضًا بالبحث في أسباب عدم اختفاء الدين من حياة المصريين رغم دعاوى العلمانية والحداثة منذ القرن التاسع عشر، ورغم المحاولات الدؤوبة من أجل تحقيق مجتمع علماني في مصر يُفصَل فيه الدين عن المجال العام.
يتناول كتاب "ديني ودين الناس" هذه الأسئلة من منظور النقد الثقافي في هذه اللحظة التاريخية الفارقة، وذلك بأسلوب سهل وشيق. كما يشرح الكتاب بعض المفاهيم مثل الحداثة والعلمانية وتجديد الخطاب الديني والثورة الدينية عن طريق تتبع كيف تُشرح هذه المفاهيم في المسلسلات والأفلام والكتب الرائجة.
فمن خلال أفلام مثل "الجمال الأمريكي" و"أفاتار" ورواية "ثلاثية غرناطة" لرضوى عاشور، تشرح هبة شريف تطور الحداثة الغربية والعلمانية التي انتهى بها الحال في أحيان كثيرة إلى عكس ما وعدت به من رفاهية ورخاء وعدالة للبشرية.
ومن خلال فيلم "الزوجة الثانية" و"المصير" و"الإرهاب والكباب"، تشرح الكاتبة كيف يتم تطويع الدين لخدمة أغراض الحكام، وكيف يتحول تجديد الخطاب الديني إلى أداة في يد النخب ولماذا يفشل هذا التجديد دائمًا.
كما يحاول الكتاب أن يعلق على ظاهرة الإقبال على الروحانيات لتأكيد فكرة الاستسلام والزهد من خلال مناقشة تسلل هذه الأفكار بنعومة في كتاب "قواعد العشق الأربعون" لـ"إليف شافاك" ومسلسل "الخواجة عبد القادر".
بالإضافة إلى ذلك، لا تغفل الكاتبة الإشارة إلى البرامج التلفزيونية و"التوك شو" التي كان لها أثر كبير في توجيه الناس وأفكارهم عن الدين والتدين وتجديد الخطاب الديني في لحظة معينة لوجهة معينة.
ويتماشى هذا الكتاب مع خطة دار العربي للنشر، فهي تهدف من خلاله إلى إجراء حوار جرئ وبنَّاء في هذه الأفكار الحساسة في المجتمع، وذلك بأسلوب بسيط تشرك فيه عامة الناس المثقفين وغير المثقفين.
