"الكُرد أو الأكراد شعب يعيش في غرب أسيا بمحاذاة جبال (زاكروس) وجبال (طوروس) وهم اليوم عبارة عن أجزاء من شمال شرق العراق وشمال غرب إيران وشمال شرق سوريا وجنوب شرق تركيا، بالإضافة إلى أعداد قليلة في جنوب غرب أرمينيا وبعض مناطق أذربيجان ولبنان، ويعتبر الأكراد إحدى اكبر القوميات التي لا تملك دولة مستقلة أو كيانًا سياسيًّا موحدًا معترفاً به عالميًّا".
يتناول تأريخًا مفصلًا لحياة الأكراد منذ نشأتهم، والمناطق التي يعيشون بها، كما يتناول حياتهم السياسية، وسعيهم الدائم لإنشء دولة تجمعهم، فهم يشعرون بأن وطنهم محتل من قبل الأنظمة الأخرى للدول التي يعيشون بها. "ويعتقد الأكراد بأنهم أكبر أمة بدون دولة في العالم المعاصر، وهم لم يندمجوا في أي من الدول الموجودين فيها، ولعدم شعورهم بأنهم بالاندماج اتخذت الحركات السياسية الكردية المنتشرة في كردستان أشكالاً متباينة، ولكنها اجتمعت تحت اسم (الحركة التحررية القومية الكردية)، وهذه دلالة واضحة على أنهم يشعرون بأن وطنهم محتل، ويُعدون هذه الأنظمة السياسية الحاكمة في هذه الدول (سلطات إحتلال)".
ينقسم الكتاب إلى ثلاثة فصول؛ الفصل الأول عن "مكونات بناء الدولة الكردية"، وهو يتناول تاريخ الأكراد، وتقاليدهم، ولغتهم، ونظامهم الاجتماعي، وتواجدهم الجغرافي. أمَّا الفصل الثاني بعنوان "تحديات بناء الدولة القومية الكردية"، وهو عن التحديات السياسية، والاقتصادية، والاجتماعية، والإقليمية التي واجهتهم وتواجههم، كما يبحث التحديات الدولية، وطرق التعاون التي نشأت بين الأكراد ودول غربية مختلفة. وأخيرًا، الفصل الثالث "مستقبل الدولة القومية الكردية"، وهو يبحث تأثير الأحداث الجارية في المنطقة على القضية الكردية ومدى نجاحها.
