"ستفاجئك هذه الرّواية قليلاً. فبعد أنْ تنتهي من قراءتها لنْ تستطيع أنْ تحكيها. الكاتب من الكاميرون، والحَدث بسيطٌ، يدور في مجتمع التّمييز العنصريّ الذي يتحكّم فيه البِيض: يستيقظ سكّان القرية على خبرٍ من الحاكم العسكريّ مفادهُ: أنّ ""زعيم البيض الأكبر"" سيأتي من باريس ليمنح العجوز ميكا وساماً؛ تقديراً لجهوده وتضحياته، هو الذي فقد ولدَيْه الّلذَيْن حاربا مع الجيش الفرنسيّ، وتبرّع بأرضه للكنيسة الجديدة، ومثل سكّان قريته، يشعر ميكا بالعَظَمة من جرّاء هذا التقدير، لكنّه سرعان ما يدرك أنّه ليس قويّاً، إنّما هو عجوزٌ ضعيفٌ مقهورٌ في مجتمعٍ ضعيفٍ مقهورٍ، ويخوض معركةً، ويُهزَم فيها من دون أنْ يظهر خصْمه على الحلبة. يحاول العجوز وأهل قريته التّشبّث بما بقي في الذّاكرة عن أنفسهم، وعاداتهم، وأساليب تعبيرهم، وردود أفعالهم، وصراعهم من أجل العدالة، ولكنّهم يدركون يوميّاً: ((أنّ البِيض لمْ يتركوا لنا شيئاً)). وفرديناند أويونو لا يتدخّل، كأنّه جالسٌ بينهم، يفعل ما يفعلون، فلا تعرف موقفه المباشر ممّا يجري، ويجرُّك أنت أيضاً لتجلس إليهم، وتشاركهم؛ فهو لا يهدف إلى تعريفك بالمشكلة التي يعيشها النّاس فقط، بل بأساليب التّعبير الإبداعيّة عند هؤلاء النّاس أيضاً."
