الرواية تأريخ لمرحلة سوداء من تاريخ الشرق الحافل بالمآسي والحروب والقتل والموت والتيه والدمار، فحملت الكاتبة القارئ إلى صحراء التيه التي حسبنا أننا خرجنا منها يومًا، ولكنّ الذي تبيّن أنّنا لا نزال بين كثبانها تائهين، لا نتلمّس طريق الخروج بعد. لتتناثر أوطاننا بين أقدام المستعمرين والمحتلين من عثمانيين وبريطانيين وفرنسيين، فاستحلنا غبارًا غير مرئي، تتحكّم بنا وبمستقبلنا نتائج حروب فرضت علينا، ولم يكن لنا ناقة فيها ولا جمل.
رواية جميلة ومكثّفة، تحتاج لقراءات معمّقة، وقد تكون محطة لدراسات أكاديمية، لما تحمله من موضوعات وأفكار وأحداث تطل على التاريخ عبر حقبة حساسة ومفصلية، محاولة تسليط الضوء على فئة من الناس عانت الاضطهاد والموت، في مقاربة لكوارث الحروب. ولكن استباقًا لما قد يقوله بعض المغالين، أو الطائفيين، أو المزايدين؛ فإنّ فاتن المر انتقدت السلطنة العثمانية، وما اقترفته من آثام في الحرب الأولى، ولكنها في الوقت نفسه لم تبشّر بحكم الاستعمار الفرنسي أو البريطاني الذي أتى على أنقاض السلطنة العثمانية، والذي تغنّى به بعض اللبنانيين، ولا يزالون. فكان واضحًا من خلال السرد، أنّ الاستعمار الأوروبي كان بدرجة السوء نفسها التي كان عليها العثمانيون، إن لم يكن أسوأ، لأنّ شعوب "المنطقة الموروثة" ما زالوا يعيشون نكبات وويلات ومصائب ما اقترفته أيادي مارك سايكس وجورج بيكو، وآرثر جيمس بلفور.
