في هذا الكتاب يجيب الكاتب إبراهيم المكرمي عن هذه الأسئلة وأكثر ، في محاولة لقراءة البُنى الذهنية والعقدية لهذه الجماعة بأسلوب عصري يتناول فيه أبرز قضاياها الشائكة في النشأة والإنتشار والتطور ، ونتبع أهم المعوقات التي تعرضت لها هذه الجماعة من ترهيب وتشريد وتكفير وقتل ودمار لمكاتبها إلى أن انقسمت وأصبحت متفرقة في شتى بقاع العالم ؛ ثم يعرض لآراء أهم المفكرين الغربيين والعرب في الدعوة الإسماعيلية .
يقول المؤلف : يعود مصطلح الإسماعيلية إلى إسماعيل بن جعفر الصادق الإبن الأكبر والإمام السابع من سلسلة أئمة آل بيت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ، وهو الذي أخفاه أبوه في حياته من قبضة العباسيين وتحديداً أبي جعفر المنصور ( 136ه ) الذي علم بجديتهم في التخلص من سلالة آل بيت رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم حيث أخذ أئمة الإسماعيلية بعد هذا الحدث من التوجه للسفر وإخفاء الهوية والعمل على نشر دعوتهم بتنظيم دقيق فكان لهم تسليط جهودهم إلى نشر دعوتهم في الكثير من أرجاء العالم الإسلامي . وقد لقيت الدعوة ظروفاً صعبة وقاهرة خصوصاً بعد ترصد العباسيين وتقطفهم لهذا الحراك السري الذي اعتبروه أحد أكبر مصادر الخطر للإطاحة بدولتهم العباسية . واستمر هذا الصراع حتى بعد ظهور الدولة الفاطمية وسقوطها عام ( 556ه ) على يد صلاح الدين الأيوبي ... " .
