في هذا الكتاب، بـيّـنتِ المؤلفةُ كيف تمكن الاستعانة بالحمض النووي للوقوف على قضايا اجتماعية. فأوردت بدءًا مشاريع التسوية القائمة على الحمض النووي، أعقبتها بدراسة بحثية لإحدى المقابر الأفريقية في مدينة نيويورك، تجلّت فيها إمكانية نقل البيانات الوراثية من عالم المختبرات إلى العوالم الثقافية والسياسية. ولم تُغفلْ أهمية «الإعلان» عن نتائج الفحص التي كانت تعرض على الشاشات الأميركية وفائدتها في إرساء مشاريع التسوية. وتناولت ما يسمّى «شتات الحمض النووي»، أولئك الذين لم يكن له جامع سوى هذا الحمض. وقد توّجت الكتاب بتجربتها الشخصية في هذا العلم. لقد كان الحمض النووي سبيلًا إلى رد مظالم واستعادة حقوقٍ، بل التحقيقِ في قضايا ظلمٍ واضطهادٍ لأمةٍ خلتْ، يظن الظانُّ أنّ قضيتَهم ذهبتْ بذهابهم، إذ لجأ أصحاب الحقوق إلى ما يسمّى بعلم النسب الوراثي. وهو علم جمع بين علم الأنساب وعلم الوراثة. وفي علم النسب الوراثي (genetic genealogy) يُستخدم الحمضُ النووي لتحديد السلالة الأبوية والأمية، ويسمى أحيانًا علم الوراثة الترفيهي (recreational genetics). وقد غيّر هذا العلم مجرى كثيرٍ من القضايا الاجتماعية، على أنّ ما مرّ بالمطالبين بحقوقهم من عقباتٍ كان أمرًا في غاية الصعوبة. فجاء هذا العلم ليفتح الملفّ ثانيةً، وليعطيَ كل ذي حقٍ حقَّه، على الرغم من أنّ الهدفَ المنشود في بعض القضايا لا يعدو أن يكون «تسوية» لعلها تردع الظالم وتضمّد جرح المظلوم، وتعزّز جانبًا من جوانب العدالة الاجتماعية للأجيال المقبلة.
