يتميز هذا الكتاب بتناوله - في عشرين فصلًا - معظم الجوانب التي تتناولها اللسانيات. ويمثل ذلك أن الفصول العشرة الأولى تتناول دراسة اللغة لذاتها - كما يقول دي سوسور - أي أنها تعرض الخطوط العامة للدراسة اللسانية المتعلقة بالأنظمة اللغوية المحض. أما الفصول العشرة التالية فتتصل بكثير من الجوانب التي تتعلق بدراسة اللغة وصلتها بالاهتمامات الأخرى.
وسيلاحظ القارئ أن الكتاب يقوم أساسًا على أمثلة من اللغة الإنكليزية - وإن أورد بعض الأمثلة من لغات أخرى، ومنها العربية. وسبب ذلك أنه موجه لقراء لغتهم الأولى الإنكليزية. وبما أن الاستبدال بهذه الأمثلة أمثلة من اللغة العربية سيجعل هذا الكتاب مختلفًا عن طبيعته الأولى فقد أبقي على الإنكليزية وعلق عليها أحيانًا بأمثلة من اللغة العربية.
وربما لا يمثل اعتماد المؤلف على أمثلة من الإنكليزية مشكلًا لسببين: السبب الأول أن هذه الأمثلة بسيطة ويمكن لمن له أدنى إلمام بالإنكليزية أن يفهمها. والسبب الثاني أن أحد مسلمات اللسانيات المعاصرة أن اللغات كلها يمكن أن تحلل بآليات ومفاهيم لسانية واحدة. لذلك يمكن أن تؤخذ الأمثلة الإنكليزية بوصفها منطلقًا ليقارن بها أمثلة من اللغة العربية.
