هذه الدراسة هي أول دراسة تاريخية مفصّلة ومستقلة لهذه المعركة الفاصلة في التاريخ السعودي، برغم وجود دراسات جادة ساهمت في توثيق دوافع المعركة وأحداثها ونتائجها، ولكنها دراسات جاءت في سياق تاريخي عام، حيث كانت جزء من كل، وليست دراسة مستقلة.
اتكأ الباحث على مصادر أولية في هذه الدراسة لـ«كون المليدا»، بالرجوع لمدونات التاريخ النجدي المخطوط منه والمطبوع، كما أن الباحث لم يغفل اقتناص الوثائق المحلية النجدية التي قدَّمت عن المعركة إشارات قريبة، مباشرة أو ضمنية بعيدة. كما اعتمد على قصائد الشعر النبطي، التي قيلت في المعركة، واكتسبت أهميتها، كونها قصائد معاصرة للحدث، فكانت مصدرًا مهمًا لتفاصيل كون المليدا، والوضع العام لأحداث ذلك الكون.
أيضًا، تم الرجوع إلى عدد وافر من الوثائق العثمانية، التي تناولت المعركة بشكل تقارير عن مجريات أحداث ما قبلها وما بعدها، والتي تداولها رجال الدولة العثمانية من موظفين مدنيين وعسكريين وولاة مناطق.
لم يغفل الباحث تتبع المصادر الأوربية، خاصة البريطانية، ورصد اتجاهاتها السياسية نحو هذا الحدث المحلي المهم، من خلال التقارير أو الكتب أو الصحف الأجنبية.
