يُسلّط الكتاب الضوء على معركة “الصريف” التي حدثت عام 1901م (1318هـ) والتي تُعدُّ واحدة من أهم المعارك الفاصلة في المنطقة، وتكتسب أهميتها التاريخية من حيث أنها كانت الممهد والإرهاص لما جاء بعدها من أحداث سياسية وعسكرية ذات أهمية، محلية وإقليمية.
تناول الباحث الأوضاع السياسية الداخلية للأطراف المتحاربة قبل المعركة (الكويت – حائل) وبواعث نشوء هذه المعركة وأسبابها، ليصل إلى ميدان القتال، شرقي القصيم، فيصفه ويُحدّد معالمه ومجرياته ونوع الأسلحة التي استُخدمت في أرض القتال، مُحللًا وشارحًا لأسباب هزيمة الجيش الكويتي وما خلّفته المعركة من آثار، سياسية واجتماعية واقتصادية.
لم يفُت الباحث أن يتناول دور ومواقف النُخبة، من علماء وتُجّار وشعراء، في هذه المعركة، وما حدث من معارضات سياسية، هنا أو هناك، لها. كما تناول مواقف القوى الدولية والمحلية تجاه المعركة.
اعتمد الباحث على الوثيقة والمعلومة والتحليل والمشاهدة الميدانية لأرض المعركة، وعلى ما كُتب عن المعركة في الصحافة العربية والأجنبية، ليكتسب الكتابُ قيمته وأهميته، كمرجع تاريخي، وكأول دراسة سعودية مُنفردة عن معركة من معارك التاريخ المحلي الحديث.
