لقد كان لإمارة المنتفق، تلك القوة المحلية، نضالًا مبكرًا في تصديها لأطراف استعمارية عديدة كالعثمانيين في بداية الأمر، وصراعهم مع الفرس، ومن ثمَّ الإنكليز الذين استطاعوا أن يوثقوا علاقتهم مع إمارات الخليج العربي منذ بداية القرن السابع عشر. لقد تَركت إمارة المنتفق بصماتها وتأثيراتها واضحة على مجمل الأحداث ليس في ولاية البصرة فقط، بل امتد ذلك إلى ولاية بغداد، ومدى تأثير ذلك حتى على القرار العثماني في اسطنبول، فعلى الرغم من أن أمراء السعدون لم يتولوا الحكم في بغداد إلا أنهم عينوا الولاة، وثبتوهم في الولاية، كما حدث للوالي سعيد بك، وصراعه بعد ذلك مع داوود باشا.
أجاد الباحث في عرضه لطبيعة الأطماع الفارسية في العراق بصورة عامة، وولاية البصرة على وجه الخصوص، في الوقت الذي تفتقر فيه المكتبة العربية لمثل هذه الأبحاث التي تُسلط الضوء على القوى المحلية التي تميزت بالطابع الوطني المبكر، والتي تصدت لتلك الأطماع.
