الأسطورة هي مسعى عفوي للإنسان للتملُّص من وجوده التاريخي، ولأجل تحقيق هذا الأمر يبدو المخيال الأسطوري للإنسان مليئًا بالإمكانات، لا يودّ أن تكون الأساطير الأخروية حجَّة، حيث نهاية التاريخ لا تتعلق بالبشر كما أمرُ بَدئه، أو حيث المستقبل أيضًا ليس رهين قرار مستقلّ للإنسان، ولكن دائمًا مقدَّم على أساس أنه تدخُّل فجائي لقوى خارقة. يلاحظ الانتشار الواسع لروايات البلايا الكونية التي ترتبط بإحساسٍ بذنب جماعي، بفكرة قِدَم العالم الذي يلزمه التجديد.
فالخلاص المنتظر والمأمول مطلوب من الجميع، وهو يكمن خارج التاريخ الإنساني ... إذًا الوعي الأسطوري موحَّد وذو صبغة جامعة، فبالنظر مثلًا إلى تصوُّر العالم في الفكر الصيني القديم فإنّ إمبراطورية الوسط يُرمز إليها بدائرة خارجها يوجد العدم، مجال الشياطين الأجنبية. إنَّ بإمكاننا التأكيد على أن تلك الرؤية توارت كليًّا ... فبمجرَّد انفصام الوحدة بين البشر والعالم الذي يَحْيَون فيه دَبَّ التبدُّل في الحضارة. فالأسطورة تندحر نحو المجال الديني في حين الفعل الإنساني يتجذَّر أكثر فأكثر في المجال اللاديني.
