يدور موضوع الكتاب حول ظاهرة انتشار القهوة في العالم العربي والإسلامي واختلاف الموقف من القهوة، الذي قسم الفقهاء/ الأدباء إلى من يحرمها، وآخر يحللها، وخاصة فيما صاحب ظهور القهوة من وجود بيوت لها (المقاهي) وما رافق ذلك من مظاهر جديدة (الغناء) والموسيقى والمسرح الشعبي الحكواتي والكراكوز). ومع استمرار الخلاف حول حلَة /حرمة القهوة بين الطرفين، دفع كل طرف إلى التأليف لإثبات صحة موقفه، مما أدى إلى تراكم تراث الرسائل في هذا المجال التي ضاع بعضها وحفظ بعضها الآخر، أيضاً كان للشعر نصيباً في القهوة، فقد اثنى الشعراء على القهوة، وأخذزا يشحذون قرائحهم لإثبات حضورهم في مدح القهوة أو ذمها، فتشكل لدينا مع الزمن (أدب حول القهوة).
ويجد القارئ في هذا العمل دراسة حول بدايات وصول القهوة من اليمن إلى الحجاز ومصر والشام في القرن العاشر الهجري/ السادس عشر الميلادي، وموقف الفقهاء/ الشعراء من ذلك، ودراسة أخرى حول بدايات انتشار القهوة والمقاهي في بلاد الشام الجنوبية وملامح التغير الثقافي في المجتمع نتيجة لذلك، أيضاً يتضمن لكتاب دراسة أخرى حول استمرار القهوة في طريقها إلى أقصى الشمال (البوسنة) وما تركت من مؤثرات هناك بما في ذلك انشغال الفقهاء/ الشعراء هناك بالكتابة عنها.
أما في القسم الثاني لهذا العمل فقد آثره المؤلف نشر ثلاثة نماذج أو ثلاث رسائل حول القهوة، وهي رسالة لعبد الله الأدكاوي من مصر التي تشمل بلاد الشام أيضاً، ورسالة من البوسنة لمصطفى الأقحصاري ورسالة صربيا للهرسكلي.
