لطالما أُشِيعَ في كتابات بعض المؤرّخين القدامى أنّ المعتزلة، ولا سيما البغداديّة منهم، عاشوا في كنف الشيعة الإماميّة، حَضَنُوهم وحَمَوْهم واستوعبوا أهمّ نظريّاتهم الكلاميّة وأشهر شيوخهم، وقد قاد هذا الرأي الخاطئ إلى تهميش دور المعتزلة في التاريخ وعدِّهم مجرّدَ فرع من فروع الإماميّة.
يُعيد هذا الكتاب النظر في علاقة فرقة المعتزلة بفرقة الشيعة الإماميّة عبر قراءة تحليليّة تفكيكيّة لنصِّ مفتاح في الموضوع، هو كتاب ابن الراوندي "فضيحة المعتزلة"، ولأهمٌ كتاب ألِّف في الردّ عليه، وهو كتاب الخيّاط "الإنتصار".
وقد انصبّ جهد الباحثة على دراسة خطاب الرجلَيّن وتفكيك بنيته الحجاجيّة السجائيّة، وتحليل الأخبار التي أورداها وإبراز طابعها التضخيمي والإبهامي. حقَّقتْ ذلك بعبارة سهلة وصياغة دقيقة وفكر نافذ وتحليل منطقي.
