رواية "البيروتي التائه" إستلها "فاروق عيتاني" من الفولكلور اللبناني، والتاريخ البعيد والقريب، والعادات والتقاليد، التي تتنوع بتنوع المناطق، والثقافة، ولكن، بالتأكيد يجمع بينها حب الوطن.
وما بين طيات الرواية، أسماء علم، أو أعلام كثيرة، وأسماء أمكنة ومواضع تفوق الأولى عددا وكثرة، والأسماء هذه مقترنة على الدوام بأوقاتها وتواريخها، في السنة والشهر واليوم والساعة ما وسع كاتبها توقيتها أو تأريخها على هذا النحو أو ذاك.
تدخل الرواية في خانة السرد الإخباري وتحفل بالحكايات الغرائبية التي كان الناس يتناقلونها في ليالي الشتاء الباردة، ففيها حكايات رجال لهم أذناب يعيشون في بلاد بعيدة. وأقزام مسوخ يهيمون ليلاً على وجوههم بين غزار رأس بيروت (...) وهناك أحاديث الغولة التي لا تشكل واضحا معروفاً لها سوى أن في جبهتها عين واحدة كبيرة. تخرج ليلاً من مغاور الروشة. تهيم تفتش عن الأولاد الذين تخلفوا ليلا في الخلاء. تخطفهم طعاما لأولادها الذين تخبئهم في المغارة.
كذلك تأتي الرواية على أخبار عوام الناس، ومنقطعي النسب ومختلفيه أكثر من أخبار الخواص والأعيان وأهل المراتب العليا.
وعلى هامش الحكايات أيضا تجول الرواية على محطات مفصلة في الحياة السياسية، في الماضي البعيد، والقريب، والمعاصر، وتأثير كل ذلك على لبنان وأهله.
"البيروتي التائه" هي أكثر من رواية، هي حكاية وطن، وسيرة ذاتية لكاتب أحب وطنه، فجاءت حكاياته نابضة حيّة، مثلما هي "أم الدنيا".
