كتبت البحوث الواردة في هذا الكتاب بين العامين 2002 و2004. وهي تتعاطى مع ثلاثة أنواع من المشكلات: المشكلات المتعلقة بالوعي بالتاريخ والواقع والعصر، وقد اهتممنا فيها بالكتابة التاريخية والسياسية عن العرب، وكتابات العرب عن أنفسهم وتاريخهم. فهناك اليوم أدبيات هائلة عن العرب في التاريخ والحاضر، أنتجت خلال العقود الثلاثة المنقضية، وهي تتعامل مع كل ما يتصل بهم انطلاقاً من وقائع الراهن. وقد أردنا في البحثين الأولين بالذات قراءة هذه البحوث أو بعض أهمها قراءة نقدية ليس لكشف أغوارها أو كشف الواقع، بل لفحص الوعي الذي يحكم رؤية الجماعة العربية لدى مثقفينا والمستشرقين والاستراتيجيين وكتاب السياسة في الغرب. أما القسم الثاني من الكتاب فيدرس الأصول النظرية لبعض القضايا المطروحة على الساحة أو السائدة في وعي المثقفين والسياسيين العرب. فبسبب تفاقم المشكلات العربية ما عادت التأملات النظرية مستحبة أو واردة لدى المعنيين بالشأن العام، ولدى الجمهور. وصار الذين يحاولون العودة بشيء من التأمل يقال لهم: بلاش فلسفة! أين أنتم من الواقع الراهن؟ والواقع الراهن يتضمن مشكلات في الوعي، أكثر مما هي في الواقع، ولذلك كان هذا الاهتمام بالعودة للتأمل النظري غير المنفصل عن الواقع، بل المرتبط أو أنها هي التي يعاد إنتاجها عبر أحابيل الوعي ومنعرجاته. أما القسم الثالث والأخير فيدور حول الوقائع والظواهر ذاتها، وعلى رأسها غزو العراق وتداعياته، والعوامل الخارجية (السياسات الأميركية بالتحديد) التي تتحكم بالوقائع والظواهر، وعلى العجز عن المواجهة، وإن تكن الممانعة مستمرة بالعراق كما بفلسطين. كنت قد أصدرت قبل عام كتاباً بعنوان: "عودة الاستعمار والحملة الأميركية على العرب"، وقد أردت من وراء هذا الكتاب أن يكون متابعة من نوع آخر لقضايا الحاضر العربي، واحتمالات المستقبل.
