يشكل هذا الكتاب مقاربة (سوسيو - دينية) تتناول ظاهرة استقدام الخدم في المملكة العربية السعودية؛ تنطلق من تجربة شخصية عاشتها الكاتبة "منيرة اليامي" أثناء وبعد الاستغناء عن الخادمة، أرادت من خلالها طرح رؤية بديلة تقوم على ثقافة التعاون بين الزوج والزوجة والأبناء؛ ونبذ الاتكالية والاعتماد على الغير في قضاء شؤون الأسرة.
تقول الكاتبة عن عملها هذا: "في كتابي المتواضع تجربتي مع الخادمة... التي شاهدتها أو سمعتها أو قرأتها. فوجدتها تحتاج إلى مختصر مفيد للقارئ. ومن ثم الحلول التي طبقتها في ممارسة حياتي اليومية. مستعينة بالله تعالى في كل الأمور دقيقها وجسيمها ثم مساعدة أسرتي التي كانت متعاونة معي في كل أمور منزلي.
وها أنا أعيش حياتي ولله الحمد بلا خادمة بعد أن كنت لا احتمل الاستغناء عنها... فلعل هذا الكتاب المتواضع يكون بادرة خير ويعين قارئه على الاستغناء عن الخادمة. فزوجي وأبنائي سعداء بدون خادمة.
إلى أختي المعلمة... أختي الموظفة... أختي ربة المنزل... أختي المسلمة... بادري بالاستغناء عن الخادمة ولا تصعبي الأمر... وكوني قدوة حسنة لمجتمعك... فالبدائل والحلول موجودة وسهلة وميسرة ولله الحمد فقط توكلي على الله ثم بادري. وليكن شعارنا من الآن وصاعداً: "بيوتنا بلا خادمات".
ضمن تلك الرؤية تدور موضوعات الكتاب وفيها تستعرض الكاتبة بدايات الظاهرة (استقدام الخادمات) في المملكة العربية السعودية؛ ثم تناقش المشاكل المترتبة من عمل الخادمة؛ بين الحاجة الماسة إليها والاستغناء عنها؛ وتطرح الحلول والبدائل عنها؛ مع استثناء ذوي الاحتياجات الخاصة، والمرضى، وكبار السن. ولا تنسى التذكير بالقدوة الحسنة سيدنا رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم في التعامل مع الخادمة "ولنا في رسول الله قدوة"؛ وتعرض لمقتطفات من بعض الدراسات الاجتماعية التي تناولت ظاهرة استقدام الخدم الخاصة بالمملكة وبيان الآثار السلبية المترتبة على هذه الظاهرة بالنسبة للفرد والمجتمع، وبعض المقالات الصحفية التي تحدثت عن الخادمات.
