من ضمن مشروع مراجعة الدرس اللساني العربي والتأريخ له، وبيان القيمة النظرية والمنهجية للكتابة اللسانية العربية تأتي دراسة الدكتور "خالد خليل هويدي" ضمن هذا المشروع العام، لكنَّها تختلف في أنها تتخذ موضوعاً محدداً من الموضوعات التي تناولها اللسانيون العرب على اختلاف مدارسهم اللسانية، ذلك هو مستوى الدلالة؛ إذ سعت إلى متابعة نظرة اللسانيين العرب لهذا المستوى، ومحاولة الوقوف على الأسس التي انطلقوا منها والاتجاهات التي سلكوها. يقول الكاتب ".. سادت عند مؤرخي الدرس اللساني المعاصر فكرة ترى أن النتاج اللساني يندرج في مجمله في إطار اتجاهين لسانيين اثنين: اتجاه بنيوي صوري، يقف في مقاربته اللغوية عند حدود بنية اللغات الطبيعية، ولا يكاد يتعداها، واتجاه تفسيري، يتجاوز أصحابه الوصف إلى التفسير وبيان الأسباب التي من أجلها جاءت الظواهر على ما هي عليه، ويمثل هذين الاتجاهين، التيار الوصفي من جهة، والتيار التوليدي والوظيفي من جهة أخرى، إذ يقتصر نشاط التيار الأول في أغلب الأحوال على جمع المعطيات اللغوية، ومحاولة وصفها وتصنيفها في مختلف المستويات اللغوية (الصوتية، والصرفية، والتركيبية، والدلالية)، في حين يتجاوز التيار الثاني الوصف الصرف للظواهر اللغوية إلى تفسيرها". وبناءً على ذلك وظف مؤلف الكتاب هذا التقسيم في ترتيب فصول الدراسة، التي جاءت في بابين، عالج الأول "الدلالة في اللسانيات الوصفية"، في حين درس الثاني "الدلالة في اللسانيات التفسيرية"، ويسبق هذين البابين تمهيد تكلم فيه على القضايا النظرية المتعلقة بـ "علم الدلالة"، من حيث النشأة والمفهوم، والمصطلح، ومركزية علم الدلالة بالنسبة إلى مستويات الدرس اللساني الأخرى، والفرق بينه وبين التداولية.
