"تحت جسر الهولندي" عمل أدبي يجمع بين القصة والرواية. استخدم فيه محمود يعقوب تقنية السرد القصصي داخل السرد الروائي، وهو عنوان يشكل إطلالة مناسبة على متن أربع روايات قصيرة وأحداثها التي تحيل إلى الواقع العراقي خلال مرحلة تمتد من الاستبداد إلى الحرب فالاحتلال، أما شخصيات العمل فهم ضحايا المرحلة السوداء من تاريخ العراق، تنتسب إلى الهامش الاجتماعي وتحمل عاهاتها المختلفة، وهي عاهات اجتماعية أو جسدية أو نفسية، حيث يفرد الروائي لكل حالة منها مكاناً في النص؛ فنرى منهم امرأة بثياب رجل تحاول أن تحمي نفسها وانتزاع لقمة عيشها بيديها انتزاعاً، ونرى منهم المتسول في عاصمة الحضارة بغداد ، ونرى أيضاً من عاد من الأسر وأصبح هيامه في الخمر أما إذا سأُل عن حاله فإنه يكتفي بالقول الواحد: "والله أنا عائش كما تعيش الزواحف مطمورةً في رمال الصحارى " وهكذا تؤول جميع شخصيات العمل إلى مصائر قاتمة لا أمل في خروجها من هذا النفق المظلم لذلك، يعمد الروائي -كما يبدو في النص - إلى رسم نفسي يجري فيه إسقاط الحالة النفسية للشخوص على الخارج وفي علاقاتهم بالآخرين، ما يجعل نصه خليطاً من الاعترافات الذاتية والانطباعات التي يغلفها بقالب سردي يسهم في تظهير الحكاية والحالة الإنسانية لكل شخصية. والكاتب بعمله هذا يعبّر عن تمكن واضح في مقاربة الواقع وإعادة صياغته فنياً بواسطة الرواية.
يضم الكتاب أربع روايات قصيرة جاءت تحت العناوين الآتية: 1- تحت جسر الهولندي، 2- إنهم يستنسخون حياتك أيها اللص الظريف، 3- التاريخ السريّ للعقرب، 4- اليقظات.
