يواجه العقل الغربي ارتهاناته وإحالاته المتكرة بشكل متعاقب إزاء الخارج بسبب ادعاءه امتلاك لحظة الصدق، في حين أن موقفاً نقدياً قد تبلور ابتداء من "نيتشه" الألماني يقرر عدم كفاية العقل على استيعاب جميع متغيرات الحيوية، هذا ما يجعله متناهياً في مداركه وصنائعه، غير أن سلطة العقل لا تحد إلا إذا ضمنته صياغات إيديولوجية، وقد عبر "دومينيك جانيكو" بقوله: "إن القوة تفرض نفسها على المعقولية كلغز، وبالتالي كمهمة، وذلك بالضبط لأن الفكر يعترف عندئذ أن ليس بالإمكان أن توجد داخله حلول نهائية -وإنما دائماً متاهات". ويدل هذا على الشك في نموذجية القول العقلاني، ومن هذا المستوى النظري يعتبره "فوكو" استمراراً للنقد النيتشوي حين يعلن عن امتلاء اللوغوس الغربي، ويتبدى ذلك أكثر في هيمنة لامعقوليته تجاه اللامعقول أو المختلف، وهذا يعني الاندثار الحتمي للميتافيزيقا المتعالية الغرية التي تدعم حقاً تصورات المركزة والشمول والاختراق والامتلاء العقلي، والتي استبعدت الإشكال الكينوني للذات من ساحة الفكر الفلسفي واكتفت بإعلاء شعارات الأنتروبولوجيا، إلا أن "هابرماس" التواق إلى استعادة الفكر الأنواري يعتبر إمكانية الحداثة ما زالت واردة فلسفياً، ولعل أهم ما تولد عن اشتغال "هابرماس" بقضية الحداثة أطروحته القائلة إن مشروع الحداثة الذي رسمت معالمه مع عصر الأنوار، لم يكتمل بعد، خاصة إثر الهجمات التي تعرض لها هذا المشروع من قبل "نيتشه"، ثم امتداداته اليوم، أي ما يسميه "هابرماس": "بفلاسفة ما بعد الحداثة" الذين يمثلون تياراً مناهضاً للحداثة، مثل "فوكو" و"لاكان" و"باتاي" من جهة، وهؤلاء انكبوا على مشكل السلطة، و"هيدغر" و"دريدا" من جهة أخرى، وقد اهتما بمسألة الميتافيزيقا.
