منذ الأيام التي يمشى فيها حول حوض البحيرة المتحجرة في نيفادا خلال تحضيره أطروحته للدكتوراه، أصبح والي بروكر مهتماً في التقلبات المفاجئة للمناخ. حفزته القفزات الفجائية المبلغ عنها في كميات ثاني أوكسيد الكربون في نماذج غرينلندا الجليدية لوضع هذه الاهتمامات بالترابط مع اهتمامه بعلم المحيطات. كانت النتيجة حسابات مفاجئة ومهمة. كان السر ما وصفه بروكر لاحقاً بـ "حزام ناقل عظيم" لمياه المحيط التي تنقل الحرارة شمالاً... الطاقة التي تنقل إلى جوار أيسلندا هي "مدهشة" كما أدرك بروكر، إذ إنها تقارب ثلث ما ترسله الشمس من طاقة إلى شمال الأطلسي بكامله. وإذا حدث شيء لإيقاف هذا الحزام، فإن المناخ سوف يتغير عبر معظم نصف الكرة الشمالي... لقد كان هناك سبب للاعتقاد بأن إيقافاً كهذا سوف يحدث سريعاً. كان بروكر سباقاً في نقل هذه الأخبار المزعجة إلى الناس. ففي عام 1987 كتب قائلاً إننا كنا نعامل تأثير الدفيئة "كفضول ساعة كوكتيل"، ولكن الآن "يجب أن ننظر إليه كتهديد للإنسان وللحياة البرية". إن نظام هو وحش متقلب الأطوار، كما ذكر، ونحن نلكزه بعصا مدببة.
