إن هذا السجل من البحث، في آثار ما قبل الفترة الإسلامية في البحرين، هو المحاولة الأولى من نوعها لجمع سلسلة من التقارير والأعمال التي نشرت بين عامي 1880 و1946، بالإضافة إلى أن مؤلفه مايكل رايس كان مستشاراً معروفاً للشؤون الخليجية على الصعيد الدولي، حيث قدم دراسة خاصة بآثار المنطقة على هامش تخطيطه لكثير من المتاحف في شبه الجزيرة العربية.
وقد جمع هنا وثائق مهمة من مصادر سبعة، معاداً نسخها بالفاكسميلي، وكذلك بنصوص مرتبطة بها وأضاف تعليقه عليها في مقدمة. ويبدأ بتقرير الكابتن إي. إل. ديوراندا، الذي كان أول من قام بعملية التنقيب المنظم لبعض تلال المدافن، وقد واصل الآثاريون بعد ذلك العمل الذي بدأه ديوراند، وأصبح تاريخ البحرين حتى اليوم معروفاً بصورة أفضل، بحكايته الساحرة والقديمة الممزوجة بالحقيقة والأسطورة التي تأخذ القارئ إلى عالم من القدم حيث كان مجيء الإغريق أنفسهم متأخر نسبياً.
وحيثما أمكن، استخدمت الوسائل التوضيحية الأصلية، وتجتمع الخرائط والرسوم البيانية لإيجاد عمل ذي قيمة عالية يرجع إليه أولئك الذين يريدون دراسة تاريخ البحرين، وأولئك الذين يرون أهميته في الدراسة الأشمل للخليج والشرق الأوسط بأسره.
