منذ عتبة العنوان "عندما يكون الحُزن لطيفاً" بدت الشاعرة أروى المهنا تجيد استحضار الذات بهمومها الخاصة، وإعلاء قيمة الألم الخاص وطرحه كثيمة شعرية، في نصوص مكتنزة بالتأزم، طافحة بالمفارقة، المفارقة بوصفها لحظة انزياح مرآوية بين المفارَق والمفارِق له، بغية الحصول على حالة شعرية ضاغطة سيميائياً وأحياناً رمزياً، وسيلتها لغة أصيلة أثيلة، تمكنت منها الشاعرة فاستغوتها وجاد بها قلمها، فكان الحزن مأساتها ومؤاساتها. تقول الشاعرة أروى المهنا: "للحزن حالة لطيفة أيضاً.. للحزن صورة رقيقة لا تكون في أوج جمالها إلا.. عندما تحتويها بأبيض قلبك.. "عندما يكون الحزن لطيفاً" يأسرني النّثر أكثر". في هذه المجموعة الشعرية، تحقن الشاعرة نصها بحمولات ومعاني أقرب إلى أن تكون جزءاً من سيرة حياة عابرة في الأمكنة والأزمنة، فالكلمات هنا بصفتها تعبيراً عن الأنثى/ الشاعرة، لا تكتمل فرديتها إلا حينما تواجه العالم وحيدة، هذا المصير يتجسد في النص إصغاء عميقاً من قبل الشاعرة لذاتها، وبما خفيّ ويعز على التوصيف. "لطالما كان الحزن عميقاً بكل تجلياته/ ولطالما كان مداي معجون/ بكل ألوان الفصول التي يؤمن بها/ الماضي الذي وهبني كل هذه الذاكرة/ لم يكن مخطئاً/ يعرف أنني سأغزل منه يومي القادم/ كإيمان متصوف/ ناسك بمحراب قلبه". يضم الكتاب سبعون نصاً ينتمي لقصيدة النثر جاءت تحت العناوين الآتية: "البعد الرابع"، "احتراق الرماد"، "يا شام"، "مناجاة"، "بين العجز والعجز"، "وفاء"، "للغد"، "عويل"، "ليس لي سقف"، "مداهمة"، "حتى عني"، "محراب"، "ماء"، (...) وقصائد أخرى.
