ودون أن يزيد حرفاً واحداً على ما قال، أخذ موضعاً له على الأرض وترك الشمس تداعب أصابع قدميه، لدقائق معدودة ظلّ يشعر بوخزات، بركن صدره الأيسر قبل أن تتسلّل رائحة البصل إلى أنفه، وتنسيه قليلاً من أوجاعه، جلست خديجة والطفل الصغير أمامه وبدأت تنتهي اللحمة التي بالكاد كانت تبصرها لكثرة قطع البطل حولها، أغمض عينيه مستسلماً للألم المتربع بصدره في حين أنهت خديجة ما تبقّى بالصحن وركنت الصبي لجواره، وقبل أن تهمّ للداخل لاحظت عليه رجفاناً شديداً، سألته: ما بك؟ لم يجبّها، وظلّ مغمض العينين عاقد الحاجبين، ودون تردّد أسرعت للداخل، والتقطت الغطاء الصوفيّ الوثير، وما أن خرجت لفناء البيت، إلا ولاحظت سكون الجسد النحيل، جثت على الأرض، ركزته بإصبعها فاهتز من ركزتها، أطلقت صرخةُ نفخت كلّ عروق رقبتها، في حين وقع الصغير بجوار الجسد النحيل الذي بدا متشمّعاً لا حياة فيه، سوى دمعتين متحجّرتين بطرف عينيه.
