يبحث هذا الكتاب في ظاهرة الأطفال المقاتلين من جانبها النفسي، الدمار الذي يتركه الإنخراط في صفوف المليشيات المقاتلة على الجهاز النفسي للأطفال من سن 14 - 18 عن طريق استخدام نموذج تحليلي نفسي ابتداءا من نفسية الطفل عندما يكون في ظل رعاية والديه ثم مرحلة المراهقة يبدأ الإنفصال والإنعتاق من هذا التماهي الوالدي الذي كان يسيطر على الطفل في ماضيه، لينطلق المراهق في مرحلة تمردية على القيم والقواعد التي تخص المرحلة الماضية مرحلة الطفولة والرعاية الأبوية، وهذه التمردية ساعدت كثيراً في تسهيل الإنظمام للمليشيات المقاتلة خصوصاً في لبنان التي كانت تعاني من حرب أهلية، بالتالي يتشكل لدى المراهقين من خلال البيئة الثقافية الواقعية نموذج أعلى هو نموذج الرجل المقاتل الذي يقتل من أجل جماعته. في الفصل الرابع والخامس والسادس تخصص الدكتورة مزين هذه الفصول الثلاثة لمعالجة حالات واقعية شاركت في الحرب الأهلية اللبنانية بصفتهم أطفال مقاتين لتظهر من خلال هذه النماذج الثلاثة أثر الصدمة العصابية.
الكتاب بحث نفسي في نفسية الطفل المقاتل، أكثر من كونه بحث اجتماعي سياسي في ظاهرة المليشيات المقاتلة.
يعيب الكتاب صعوبة لغته التي تحتاج قارئ مطلع ولو بشكل بسيط على مصطلحات ونظريات فرويد في علم النفس.
