وجاء الكتاب تحت عنوان «ليتر من الدموع - نضال شابة للحياة (مذكرات آيا)» وهو من تأليف آيا كيتو الفتاة اليابانية التي بدأت بكتابة مذكراتها في سن الخامسة عشر بعدما بدأت تعاني من مرض ضمور المخيخ. ولكن مع تدهور حالة آيا، أصبحت مذكراتها غير مقروءة فعلياً. ولكن رغبتها في الكتابة لكي تعيش لم تنخفض على الإطلاق، فواصلت الكتابة في كراسة الرسم باستخدام قلم سحري بكل ما أوتيت من قوة في يد لا تتحرك كما تشاء. لذلك قامت شيوكا كيتو، والدتها، بإعادة صياغتها وهي تستبق التباسات الموت المنتظر لآيا مستعيدة وقائع فضاءات المرض وكأنما لم تتوقف أبداً... وخلال عملية التحرير، تعاون العديد من أصدقاء العائلة وقدموا للأم تشجيعاً هائلاً؛ الأم المكلومة التي لم يتبق في ذاكرتها سوى كلمات قالتها آيا قبل تدهور حالتها الصحية: "سيكون من الجميل أن أموت وأنا متمددة على سجادة جميلة من الزهور وأستمع إلى الموسيقى المفضلة لدي".
لقد توفيت آيا بهدوء بينما كانت محاطة بعائلتها قبل خمس دقائق من الواحدة بعد منتصف الليل يوم 23 مايو 1988 وعمرها خمسة وعشرون عاماً. وعلى الرغم من عجزها عن الكلام، تلفظت قبل مغادرتها هذا العالم بوضوح بالصوت «a» وهو المقطع الأول من كلمة ’arigato‘ (شكراً لكم).
