ولد ميخائيل بافلوفيتش شيشكين عام 1961 في موسكو، أنهى كلية اللغات الرومانية والألمانية في المعهد التربوي الإجتماعي في موسكو، عمل معلماً للغة الإنكليزية في المدرسة، نشر أول أعماله النثرية بعنوان "درس في فن الخط" في مجلة "زناميا - الراية" (العدد 1 لعام 1993) ليصبح أحد كتّاب المجلة الدائمين.
كانت مجلة "زناميا" أول من نشر روايته "الجميع تنتظرهم ليلة واحدة"، والقصة الطويلة "الموسيقي الأعمى" وأيضاً رواية "الإستيلاء على إسماعيل" التي حازت على جائزة البوكر للرواية في عام 1999.
يعيش في زيوريخ، حيث قام بإصدار دليل أدبي تاريخي "سويسرا الروسية".
