رغم ما تعانيه المجتمعات من اتساع الهوة بين الطبقات وبين الفقراء والأغنياء، جاءت العولمة لتوسع الهوة بين الفريقين، حيث ازداد الفقراء فقراً، وتضخمت عناصر الثروة بيد الفريق الآخر. وهنا تبرز مخاطر العولمة التي يعالجها مؤلف هذا الكتاب حيث ازدادت نسبة المرض وانتشر الفقر وانهارت الثقافات التقليدية. ونتيجة لذلك أصبح الفقراء عاجزين عن الاستجابة لمتطلبات هذه التطورات السريعة.
ويذهب المؤلف إلى أن النموذج الإنجلو-ساكسونية الذي يهيمن على عملية العولمة يزيد من عدم المساواة في الفرص تحت ذريعة النمو الاقتصادي والمنافسة. كما أن الأغنياء يتحركون مدفوعين بعوامل السوق إلى التصرف بطريقة مؤثرة في تكوين مسافة أبعد بينهم وبين الفقراء.
إن مؤلف هذا الكتاب يحدد بوضوح مخاطر العولمة المتوحشة، ويطالب بمجتمع عادل تتحقق فيه المساواة في الفرص، ويدعو إلى رسم مخطط لتقاسم المسؤولية ووضع خطة تجريبية لتكوين مجتمعات ثابتة ومبتكرة في المناطق الفقيرة.
"هذا الكتاب هو عرض مثير للجانب الخطر من العولمة، وهو مجابهة ضرورية للاقتصاديين الذين يسارعون إلى الدفاع التلقائي عن العولمة. ومع الاعتراف بأن العولمة لا يمكن أن تختفي إذا اكتفينا بالتمني، نرى المؤلف يلتفت إلى السؤال المناسب: كيف يمكننا التأكد من عدم ضياع إسهامها المحتمل للخير العام؟".
وفي الكتاب يقدم "روبرت إسحاق" أفكاراً حديثة حول العولمة من شأنها تعزيز الجدال الدائر الذي يستقطب المتشائمين والمفرطين بالتفاؤل. ويعيدنا عمله هذا إلى أفكار أورتيغاي. غاسيت التي سادت في أواخر الثلاثينيات من القرن المنصرم، عندما قامت الجماهير بإسقاط العولمة آنذاك، وأسقطت معها أسوأ كساد اقتصادي وأكثر الحروب وحشية عرفهما البشر.
