كانت باكستان مقراً لأخطر إرهابيي العالم. هناك اعتقاد بأن أسامة بن لادن شخصياً يختبئ بالقرب من حدودها. بعد 11/9 حول قائد باكستان العسكري الجنرال برويز مشرف اتجاهه السياسي بالكامل في خطوة أذهلت الكثيرين، وتعهد بتقديم الدعم لحرب أميركا على الإرهاب. لكن زاهد حسين، الصحفي الباكستاني المحنك، يقول في هذا الكتاب المقنع، إن موقف مشرف الجديد ليس كما يبدو؟
يصف حسين للمرة الأولى بالتفصيل العلاقة المشبوهة بين المجاهدين الباكستانيين ووكالة المخابرات العسكرية الفاعلة جداً ISI حيث استغلت الوكالة في الثمانينيات حماسة المجاهدين للقتال في أفغانستان، ولاحقاً في كشمير، وعبر تطبيق هذه الاستراتيجية أسهم الجيش في ولادة ثقافة الجهاد التي كانت السبب في استنفاده فيما بعد.
يكشف حسين، بناء على مقابلات حصرية مع لاعبين محوريين، كيف اتخذ مشرف قراراً مصيرياً بدعم حرب أميركا ضد حركة طالبان، التي ساعدتها الاستخبارات الباكستانية على الوصول إلى السلطة في المقام الأول، كما يصف أيضاً بتفاصيل مذهلة رد فعل المجاهدين عندما انقلب عليهم حلفاؤهم السابقون. حول هذا يقول حسين إن مشرف يعيش في الوقت الضائع.
استخدم حسين علاقاته الواسعة للتسلل إلى شبكات المجاهدين، وسبر عملياتها، ومصادر تمويلها، وعلاقاتها مع جماعات متعددة الجنسيات مثل القاعدة، اجتاز الممرات الجبلية الشائكة في وزيرستان، وجلس إلى مائدة الضباط في روالبندي، ودخل المدارس الدينية الطائفية في البنجاب لاستكشاف التحديات التي تواجه مشرف، والتحقق مما إذا كان يمتلك السلطة (أو الرغبة السياسية) لتحقيق الانتصار.
ونتيجة لتسبب متمردو طالبان في توجيه ضربات جوية أميركية على حدود باكستان مع أفغانستان، وتفاقم التناقض المستحيل في موقف مشرف، مما ولد صراعاً بين باكستان والإسلام المتشدد نتج عنه تداعيات خطيرة ليس على المناخ الإيديولوجي في الشرق الوسط وحسب، وإنما على أمن العالم كله.
