خلال العقدين الأخيرين تطوّر حجم ونوع جمهور الرواية في السعودية، وتحولت الرواية من سياقها الفني إلى سياق إجتماعي، وتغيّرت من مسألة نخبوية إلى قضية شعبية، وصار التعامل معها بوصفها أداة ثقافية مثيرة، ولاعباً إجتماعياً مؤثراً، ومناسبة للإعراب عن المواقف والآراء، وفرصة لممارسة المكاشفة، وليست مجرد مظهر إبداعي...
هذا الكتاب محاولة تحليلية لفهم هذه الظاهرة الثقافية التي حظيت بإهتمام إعلامي واسع، وعناية جماهيرية عريضة، وتكتسب هذه المحاولة قيمتها بجمع التحليل الذي يتعاطى مع الظاهرة من حيث الملامح والسياقات والنتائج، إلى القراءة الفنية التي تتفاعل مع نماذج من المحاولات الروائية ضمن المرحلة، وتزداد هذه القيمة مع توقيت المحاولة الذي يأتي في اللحظة الأولى لتقدّم الكتابة التحليلية والدراسة النقدية للمجتمع المحلي على حساب الرواية؛ فهو كتاب يأتي في نهاية مرحلة من عمر الرواية، وبداية أخرى.
يقترح المؤلف تسمية الرواية في هذه المرحلة بالرواية الجماهيرية، تمييزاً لها عن نظيرتها التي بقيت خلال ستة عقود ضمن دائرة النخبة، وهو يضعها ضمن سياق ثلاث ظواهر مصاحبة تتعلق بتقدم حرية التعبير في السعودية، ويحدد روايات "الرياض نوفمبر 1990م" لسعد الدوسري، و"شقَة الحريَّة" لغازي القصيبي، وثلاثية "أطياف الأزقَّة المهجورة" لتركي الحمد، منطلقاً للرواية الجماهيرية...
