يشير الكتاب إلى عملية اغتيال الرئيس رفيق الحريري وتأثيرها المفجع على البيروتيين خصوصاً، واللبنانيين عموماً، ويتحدث عن حياة الرئيس الشهيد وسلوكه في مجتمعه البيروتي الضيق، ومجتمعه اللبناني الأرحب، ومدى تأثره بهما وتأثيره عليهما. ويعود تركيزي على مسيرته البيوتية إلى عشقه لهذه المدينة التي بادلته عواطفه النبيلة بالحب والوفاء والولاء. ويتحدث عن مآثره وتصرفاته وعلاقاته، وما كان يتحلى به من صفات قيادية وخصال جميلة وأخلاق حميدة، عرفتها ولمستها عن قرب بمواكبتي مسيرته الوطنية منذ بدايتها، والتي أعطيتها جهداً كبيراً لشرح سياساته ونهجه بين المواطنين وخصوصاً الأطباء، إيماناً بقيادته الرشيدة وبالآمال المعلقة عليه الانتقال بلبنان من دولة طوائف إلى دولة "الطائف".
ويتطرق إلى سياساته الوطنية والعربية والدولية، وما أنجزه وما كان يخطط لتنفيذه في لبنان من أجل إعلاء شأن هذا البلد في محيطه العربي وفي الدائرة الإنسانية الكبرى. وكذلك التحقيق الدولي والمحكمة الدولية والتداعيات التي رافقتهما، والاغتيالات السياسية التي طالت رموزاً وطنية وإعلامية وأمنية. والأزمة السياسية التي يمر فيها لبنان، وتأثيرها على هوية الوطن ومصيره، والعلاقات مع سوريا ومضاعفات تأزمها على العلاقات بين الشعبين الشقيقين.
ويتحدث الكتاب عن "حزب الله" والضغوط التي يمارسها على الساحة الداخلية، وحرب تموز 2006 وتداعياتها على كافة الشؤون الداخلية، و"غزوة بيروت" وما أدت إليه من شرخ واسع كاد يطيح بالوحدة الإسلامية. ويعود تخصيص باب خاص بـ"حزب الله" إلى الدور المحوري الذي يلعبه الحزب على الساحة اللبنانية، لما يمثله من ثقل شعبي وسياسي وعسكري، ولارتباطاته الوثيقة بالمحور الإقليمي.
كما يتناول الحوار الوطني بين الأفرقاء السياسيين الرئيسين، والأزمة الرئاسية وما رافقها من جدال وتشنجات سياسية وتوترات أكنية وتدخلات خارجية.
