تطرح المتغيرات العالمية أسئلتها المحرجة والجادة على الكتّاب لكي تمتحن نظرياتهم وأنساقهم المعرفية، بقدر ما تكشف عن أنماطهم في التفكير وفي طرق مقاربتهم للأحداث والمجريات في ظل مفاهيم ما تزال حاضرة في حياة المجتمعات ولا سيما العربية منها، ولعل الدكتور ناصر زيدان واحد من مفكري العصر الذين لهم أدواتهم الخاصة في التحليل والتشخيص والفهم، فخطّ لنا رؤيته في كتاب وسمه بعنوان «الدولة والعروبة بين الواقع والمرتجى» يعيد الكاتب طرح العلاقة بين هذين المفهومين في سياق تحديات وأزمات وتحولات لا يُمكن تجاهلها، فماذا يقول الكاتب زيدان عن الدولة والعروبة في هذا الكتاب: "المعضلةُ العصرية التي يتخبَّط فيها العالم العربي اليوم؛ ناتجةٌ عن غياب الدور المثالي للدولة، أو ربما من تهميش هذا الدور في بعض الأماكن، أو من جراء الإخفاقات التي أصابت عملية بناء الدولة في أماكن أخرى. لم ينجح العرب في انتاج دولة موحدة، لا اتحاد فعلي بين دول متنوعة (باستثناء تجربة مجلس التعاون الخليجي)، وأخفقت أغلبية التجارب العربية في عدد من الأقطار في صناعة نموذج مُعاصر لدولة وطنية متماسكة، وعادلة، وقوية، تستندُ إلى قوة القانون والأنظمة. ذلك الإخفاق حصل في وقتٍ كان العالم يتطور على شاكلةٍ سريعة، وبطبيعة الحال؛ فإن الركائز الأساسية لمسار التطور؛ تُجسدها الدولة التي تستندُ إلى القانون، أو من خلال اتحاد لمجموعة من الدول، في إطارٍ فيدرالي أو كونفيدرالي، يجمعان طاقات الأمة، أو مُقدرات الشعوب في بوتقةٍ مُتكاملة. هدفنا من إعداد هذا الكتاب ونشره؛ المساهمة في تنوير بعض الزوايا المعتمة في المساحة العربية الواسعة، والدعوة إلى ركوب قطار التطور والعلم والانفتاح كسبيل وحيد لإنقاذ حياة الأمة. ليس لنا هدف مادي أو شخصي. وحده ارتياح قُرائنا الأعزاء يعوِّض لنا الأتعاب، ويُيلسم الجروح التي انفتحت في إبان البحث عن المعلومات المطلوبة ومعرفتنا لويلات ومآسي لم نكن على إطلاع عليها. فأحياناً ربما أفضل أن تعرف قليلاً من أن تعرف كثيراً، خصوصاً إذا كان الأمر يتعلق بالبلية والكَدَر".
