كانت هزيمة يونيو إحدى الانعطافات السياسية والاجتماعية البالغة الأهمية، التي زلزلت (النظام الاشتراكي العربي)، والتي فسرها اليسار العربي المتقدم حتى في وعيه بأنها نتيجة أخطاء كبيرة في نظام البرجوازية الصغيرة وتردده بين اليسار واليمين! وأصيب محفوظ بصدمة نفسية وفكرية كما تجلت في أعماله التي أعقبت الهزيمة، مثل "تحت المظلة" والتي قاربت الهذيان، دون أن يكون فيها شكل فني محدد ومتبلور، وأعقبها بأعمال بين المسرحية والرواية، هي عبارات عن حوارات غامضة لم أصل إلى أبعادها وقتذاك. الآن وأنا أستعيد هذه اللحظات أتأملها على ضوء جديد، فنجيب محفوظ الذي ظلت جذوره الليبرالية تمنعه من التطابق مع النظام العسكري الوطني الشمولي، وجد من موقعه الشعبي الذي اغتنى بالتحليل الفني لمصر خلال نصف قرن، ومن خلال موقعه كمواطن مهمش في هذا النظام، إن تضاده مع هذا النظام ضروري لنمو صدقه الفني، حيث تتناقض الشعارات الضخمة للنظام والدهس اليومي للإنسان العادي، ولدهس الفكر والفن وغياب تلك التعددية الثرة الموجودة في النظام الملكي. ولكن نجيب محفوظ، من جهة أخرى، قد توقف عن التحليل الفلسفي والنظري عموماً، وهو الذي بدأ به حياته الفكرية...
