تتحدث الرواية عن الملكة كليوباترا؛ التي لم تتجاوز الثامنة عشرة من العمر؛ ولكنها استطاعت أن تحكم الساحل الشرقي للبحر المتوسط من جهة، والعالم الغربي من جهة ثانية، كما تروي تفاصيل حبها ليوليوس قيصر ومارك أنطونيو، وقصة موتها.
يخطف بريق الرخام والعقيق والذهب التي تزين قصرها الأنظار، ولكن وطأة الدسائس الجنسية والمؤامرات السياسية التي تلفه تبقى أقوى بريقاً وأكثر تأثيراً، بفضل كليوباترا المخطِّطة الخطرة والمفاوضة الماهرة.
ورغم أن حياتها امتدت إلى أقل من أربعين سنة، ولكنها كانت كافية لتحديد معالم العالم القديم. إذ إنها تزوجت مرتين، وفي كل منهما شقيقاً. حيث شنت حرباً شعواء ضد الأول في سني مراهقتها، ودست السُّم للآخر، وفي النهاية تخلصت من شقيقة منافسة لها، إذ إن الدسائس والاغتيالات كانتا من شيم هذه العائلة. ويظهر أن كليوباترا عاشرت رجلين فقط، وكانا على التوالي يوليوس قيصر ومارك أنطونيو أهم رجلين في الإمبراطورية الرومانية في ذاك العصر. ورغم أن الاثنين كانا متزوجين، ولكن كليوباترا كان لديها طفل من يوليوس قيصر، وارتفع عدد أولادها إلى أربعة.
كانت أغنى حكام حوض البحر المتوسط في عصرها، كما أن علاقتها بمارك أنطونيو أكدت مقولة أنها أكثر نساء الأرض تأثيراً على الإطلاق، حيث حاولت بالاشتراك معه إنشاء إمبراطورية جديدة عبر حلف سبّب نهايتهما. ومنذ ذلك الحين تربعت كليوباترا – الملكة – في خيالنا...
