يجسد في سطوره أسطورة كليوباترة بشكل أدبي فذ ، غير ناظر إلى المصادر القديمة، ذات الروايات المتناقضة ، بل يرى فيها صورة انسانية مختلفة ، يسلط الضوء عليها .
والمؤلف قد أبصر قلة الأسانيد حول كليوباترة، فرأى أن يملأ هذا النقص مستعينا بعلم النفس وبأصح كتب التاريخ ، ملتزما جانب نجوى الذات وحركات الروح، مصورا في شخص كليوباترة إما عاشقة أو ومحاربة وملكة، فجاء كتابه هذا منقطع النظير.
ومما يزيد هذا الكتاب – بحسب رأي مترجمه - قيمة اشتماله على سيرة لأبطال كليوباترة الثلاثة، قيصر وأنطونيوس وأكتافيوس الذين كان لهم مقام عريض في التاريخ العام، وذلك بالمقدار الذي يلائم حياة هذه الملكة، فكتاب جامع لهذه المزايا يكون، لا ريب، ممتعا نافعا، وأهلا بأن يسد فراغا في عالم الأدب العربي.
ومؤلف هذا الكتاب إميل لودفيع،الذي ألف من قبل كتاب "النيل والبحر المتوسط"، ثم أعقبه بكتاب "كليوباترة"، تلك الملكة البطلمية المصرية التي كان الشمال سيتغرق ذهنها، فيصورها المؤلف طامحة إلى ما وراء البحر من بلاد اليونان والرومان، فيكون هذا الكتاب، إذن، متمماً للنيل والبحر المتوسط، وحلقة وصل بينهما.
