بين ثورة الطبيعة وثورة الحبّ، تتعدد عوالم الروي في «عطش النوارس» عند الروائي صباح مطر، ويتركز السرد حول مشاهد تدور أحداثها فوق النهر وقربه، جزر نائية، وبراري مكشوفة، وتلال مرتفعة، هو تاريخ جمعي يحمل في طياته الكثير مما يحرك الأشجان ويؤجج الأحزان، تأريخ شفاهي يرويه الكبار ويحفظه الصغار، ليس عن الفيضان وحده أو العيش فوق الماء وقربه، بل عن أحداث ومآثر تختزلها الذاكرة، قصص حب، مساجلات، معارك، مناسبات مفرحة وأخرى حزينة...
وسط هذا العالم تنفتح الرواية على قصة حبٍّ بطليها "شاكر" و"نيران"، هكذا سوف يندلق الوله سيولاً جارفةً تطوف بالعاشقين نحو شواطئ الغرام، ولكن يظلّ للقدر عثراته، وللعادات والتقاليد أسوارها وقوانينها، وليشكّل الفراق الجزء الناقص من الحكاية، والوجه الآخر لحياة أخرى أبدية ستختار أحداهما؟
في الخطاب الروائي تبدو الرواية وكأنها سيرة ذاتية للمكان، تتداخل بها وتتخللها خطوط من سيرة المرويّ له، هي استعادة ماضٍ حائر بين البداوة والمدينة، واستحضاراً متواتراً للعتبات التي تفتح المدى على البدايات ورحلة التحوّلات بين هذين العالمين وأسرارهما الدفينة، ولعل هذا ما يمنح النص عند صباح مطر روائيته/ فنيته؛ فيوهم بواقعية الرواية وصدقيتها.
من أجواء الرواية نقرأ:
"... الله كم مرعب هو الموت!!!!، مرعب إذا نزل بساحة الأحبة مطوّحاً بهم إلى عالم الغياب الأبدي بلا حساب لحال القلوب الكسيرة.
ما زالت تعيش الصدمة ولم تستوعبها، لا تصدّق أن شاكراً لم يعد محسوباً على أهل الدنيا، تصرمت أيامه وانقضت ساعاته وصرعته سكرة الموت ذاهبة به إلى ما وراء عالم المحسوسات، إلى عسكر الموتى وضيق اللحود، إلى عالم سمعت عنه أقاويلاً لم تستخلص منها أي فكرة واضحة عن ذلك الوجود...".
