في كتابه "الفهم الثوري للدين والماركسية" يناقش زاهر الخطيب الجوهر الثوري المشترك بين الماركسية، وكلٌ من المسيحية والإسلام وموقف كلٌ منها تجاه الإنسان،ـ وقضايا مصيرية أخرى في ظل مستجدات راهنة تجري على الساحة العربية والإسلامية اليوم. ففي مقدمة الكتاب يقول: "الفهم الثوري للدين والماركسية". لا سيما بعدما شاع، زوراً وزيفاً وبهتاناً، مصطلح مشؤوم، أطلق عليه تسمية "الربيع العربي" وعلى ضوء خطر إستشراء، وانتشار وباء الإرهاب التكفيري أو تهديده الشعوب، والحضارات على امتداد الكرة الأرضية ...".
بهذا التساؤل يبدأ المؤلف كتابه ومنه ينطلق لتفسير مفاهيم تتناول موضوعات عديدة مثل العنف والجهاد، بالإضافة إلى عرض الموقف الإسلامي من اتباع الديانات الأخرى ولا سيما موقف الأزهر الشريف ودار الإفتاء المصرية المسيحية، فضلاً عن مناقشة "النظرية الماركسية" ومقولة الصراع الطبقي باعتبار "أن الإسلام كثورة طبقية إجتماعية قامت ضد الظلم والطغيان، كما قامت من أجل المستضعفين في الأرض، ومن أجل بناء مجتمع العدل والكفاية والمساواة". وهكذا تمتد موضوعات الكتاب لتلامس قضايا الحرية والشخصية والمعتقدات الذاتية الفردية وغيرها ...
