تدور أحداث رواية "شقراء كالذهب" بين البحرين ومدينة ريدنج البريطانية. تسرد الرواية قصة شاب يدعى "خالد الثالث" من مواليد 1987 يعيش مع والديه في شقة في البسيتين، إحدى مناطق المحرق. تنتمي أسرته إلى طبقة ذوي الدخل المتوسط التي كانت تمثل أغلبية الشعب في ذلك الوقت. شغل والده منصب سكرتير مكتب المفتش العام الأمر الذي أدى إلى نقلة نوعية ومادية في حال الأسرة الصغيرة. بعد بضع سنوات من شغله لهذا المنصب يزج به في السجن لجريمة لم يقترفها. نتيجة لذلك تمر الأسرة بتقلبات كثيرة. بعد سنوات يسافر خالد لدراسة الماجستير في ريدنج حيث يسكن مع أسرة كندية من أصول لبنانية، ليجد ألغازاً كثيرة تتعلق بهذه الأسرة. أول الألغاز هو سبب تأجيرهم للغرفة على الرغم من غناهم الفاحش، أما اللغز الأكثر غموضاً فهو اختفاء رب الأسرة قبل عقد من الزمان من دون أن يعرف أحد سبب ذلك. بعد أسابيع من استقراره في ريدنج تعود الفتاة الشقراء من نيويورك بسبب مشاكل مع والدها لتعيش مع أسرتها، وأول ما يثير استغرابها وجود هذا الشخص الغريب بينهم. بعد ذلك، تحدث أمور عديدة بين خالد والفتاة الشقراء. تغوص الرواية في كثير من المشاعر الإنسانية من حب، وفقد، وظلم، وكره وغيرها من العواطف. وخلال إطار الرواية الزمني الواقع بين عامي 1987-2014 تتناول الرواية أحداثاً مهمة جرت في البحرين منها أحداث التسعينيات وأول انتخابات برلمانية. كما تناقش قضايا كثيرة مثل المحسوبيات، البطالة، الوظيفة، والعلاقات الاجتماعية التي تُسرد تزامناً مع المراحل العمرية لخالد. تتكون رواية "شقراء كالذهب" من 30 فصلاً، وقد انتهج الكاتب أسلوب الراوي في الفصول الثلاثة الأولى قبل أن يبدأ بطل القصة "خالد" سرد قصته.
