تقف السيدة تيريز عند نافذة غرفة نومها المطلة على شارع روزوود كلوز، وسط صخب وضجيج أُسرتها المؤلفة من زوجها كريس وأولادها فرانك وأودري والصغير فيليكس، لقد قررت رميّ كمبيوتر فرانك وتحطيمه ويبدو أنّ لا عودة عن قرارها!!
يحب فرانك "لَعِبُ أرض الغزاة"، ويقضي معظم أوقاته بالتدرب عليها، الشيء الذي تعارضه السيدة تيريز التي أرادت أن يكبر ابنها ليهتم بالكتب والفن والطبيعة والمتاحف وربما رياضة تنافسية، ولكن فرانك خالف إرادتها، واعتبر أن "أرض الغزاة" هي رياضة تنافسية، والأمر عنده بمنتهى الجدية، أنه يتمرن بما يكفي للدخول في مسابقة "أرض الغزاة" الدولية في تورنتو وخاصة أن قيمة الجائزة تبلغ ستة ملايين دولار! فهل يستطيع فرانك الوصول إلى حلمه والفوز بجائزة الستة ملايين اللعينة كما يحلو لأمه أن تسميها؟
أما "أودري" البالغة من العمر أربعة عشر عاماً فيبدو أنها تعاني من اضطراب القلق، فهي لا تستطيع إجراء اتصال بصري مع شخص عبر الكاميرا ، وتنتابها موجة رعب كلما حاولت التواصل مع الآخرين، وعلى الرغم من كونها تخضع للعلاج تحت إشراف الطبيبة المختصة سارة إلاَّ أنها لا تحرز سوى تقدماً بطيئاً. ولكن، عندما تجتمع مع لينوس زميل أخيها بالألعاب، تبدأ بالتحدث إليه عن مخاوفها، بطريقة لم تكن قادرة على القيام بها مع أي شخص من قبل. تتعمق الصداقة والثقة بينهما لتتطور إلى حالة رومانسية جميلة...
من أجواء رواية «البحث عن أودري» نقرأ:
"... لم نفزْ. ليس هذا فحسب، بل سُحقنا.
أعتقد أن أمي صُدمت حقاً. أظن أنها تصوَّرتنا في النهائيات في تورونتو مع جائزة الستة ملايين دولار، وهي تتباهى بذلك أمام جميع الآباء الآخرين.
عندما أخبرناها بالنتيجة، قالت بذهول: "كيف غلبوكم؟"، فقال فرانك بتعاسة: "لقد لعبوا بشكل أفضل منا. كانوا بارعين حقاً". فتقول أمي على الفور: "في الواقع، أنت بارع أيضاً. قتلت الكثير من الناس. أعني، لديك تقنية رائعة يا فرانك. أليس كذلك يا كريس؟ تقنية ممتازة". لا يمكنك إلا أن تحب أمي. إنها تتصرف الآن كما لو أن الشيء الوحيد الذي تثمِّنه في الحياة هو أرض الغزاة...".
