خلال الحرب العالمية الثانية تتعرف أربع فتيات بريطانيات إلى جنود أميركيين. ويغرمن بهم ويتزوجنهم قبل أن يغادر الأزواج لخوض غمار الحرب مجدداً تاركين الزوجات خلفهم.بعد أن تضع الحرب أوزارها. وبعد مرور زمنية على انفصال الزوجات عن أزواجهن. تقرر الزوجات الأربع السفر إلى أميركا للالتحاق بأزواجهن، وذلك بعد صدور قرار يسمح لزوجات الجنود الأميركيين بموافاتهن إلى أميركا.ويشاء القدر أن تلتقي الزوجات الأربع على متن سفينة واحدة وتنشأ بينهن صداقة وطيدة، فتروي كل منهن قصتها للأخريات وتشاركهن مخاوفها وتوقعاتها وبعد الوصول إلى أميركا تتفرق الصديقات بعد أن تعاهدن على اللقاء مجدداً.تمر الأشهر وكل واحدة منهن تعيش مصاعب مختلفة، وتكتشف حقائق كانت تجهلها، ويحصل تغير جذري في حياتهن. إلا أنه وبعد مرور فترة طويلة يلتقين مجدداً، ويقدمن الدعم بعضهن لبعض، وتدرك كل منهن الظروف التي عاشتها الأخريات.عند الفراغ من مطالعة هذه الرواية سيكون القارئ على بينة من الحقائق المجهولة وطبيعة الظروف التي عاشتها النساء الأربع والمرحلة التاريخية التي رصدتها الرواية وانعكاس كل ذلك على مصائر الدول والأفراد.
