في روايته «آباء غير شرعيين» يتناول الروائي محمد باجنيد ظاهرة الأطفال غير الشرعيين (اللقطاء) في المجتمع العربي، فبين أن ينتمي الإنسان لأسرة شرعية وبين أن لا ينتمي لأسرة شرعية حقائق مؤلمة تطرحها الرواية من خلال حكاية هدى بطلة الرواية – اللقيطة - لأبوين معروفين وربما مجهولين مثل أقرانها في دار الأيتام والأسر البديلة الذين لا يشغلهم سوى البحث عن الحقيقة – نحن أبناء من؟ - وبنظرة إلى عالم الدار من الداخل حيث تدور أحداث الرواية ، نكتشف أن اللقيط ليس مجهول الأبوين فقط، فهناك أولاد أسر وقبائل معروفة أجبرت الظروف والديهم على التخلي عنهم كحالاة الوفاة وعدم وجود العائل، والبعض الآخر من الأطفال تم إيداعهم في الدار رغماً عنهم لعدم صلاحية الأسرة وإهمالها، كتعرض الابن أو البنت للتحرش الجنسي من قبل والديهما أو نتيجة العنف الأسري... ومنهم أيضاً كانوا أطفال الخطيئة لعاشقين قبل الزواج؛ فباتوا أطفال غير شرعيين لا يجرؤ أهلهم على الاعتراف بهم حتى بعد زواجهم الشرعي.
هذه الحالات التي تقولها الرواية تتداخل وتتناسل وتبدو تنويعات على حكاية واحدة، هي حكاية مجتمع تقليدي له معاييره الخاصة في الحب والزواج والإنجاب.. ولا يغفر لمن خرج على حدود الشرع والقانون... وهنا لا بد أن يُسجل للروائي محمد باجنيد جرأته في مقاربة موضوعاً هو أحد المحرمات في مجتمع عربي محافظ، وهي جرأة يحتاج إليها مجتمعنا المعاصر وقد عرف الروائي باجنيد كيف يوازن بين طرحه والواقع، على صعوبة هذه المهمة.
من أجواء الرواية نقرأ:
"نفترض أن كل إنسان لديه أبوان ويجزم بأنهما شرعيان، فهل يجزم هذا الإنسان أن والده هو ابن شرعي لوالديه أيضاً؟! باختصار ألا يمكن أن يكون أحد الأجداد غير شرعي، وولد نتيجة علاقة غير شرعية مثلي؟! وعلى هذا إذا ثبت أن أحد الأجداد غير شرعي، فمعنى ذلك أن كل من وُلد من هذا الجد غير الشرعي يمكن اعتباره غير شرعي أيضاً!".
