ضَغطٌ كبيرٌ مُورِسَ على مروان أثناء الأحداث – الحرب الأهلية اللبنانية - ليلتحق بأحد الأحزاب الطائفية ويستزلم لزعماء طائفيين ويتعصّب دينياً هو ورفاق له من مختلف المناطق والطوائف، فأبى وظلّ موضوعياً حرّ الرأي يؤمن بلبنان وطناً للجميع؛ فخُطف، وتعرَّض للإهانات والتعذيب والموت على أيدي المسلحين، وانقذه أحد أصدقائه في آخر لحظة، فغادر وطنه مرغماً فقيراً في العين دمعة وفي القلب غصّة، وجرجر عذاباته في بلاد الاغتراب. ولكنّه كافحَ واستشرسَ كأمثاله من الشباب اللبناني المثقّف الموضوعي المهجّر قهراً، وأصبح دكتوراً في القانون وفي الآداب، وعاد إلى لبنان مع شلّة من الرفاق المثقّفين للمساهمة في بناء دولة علمانية ديمقراطية حديثة، ولكنّهم مُنعوا، وقضي على أحلامهم في مهدها، في دولة دخلت فيها الميليشيات المختلفة وجعلتها دولة ميليشيات ممّا اضطرهم إلى الهجرة من جديد. تُصوِّر رواية «زمن آخر» معاناة جيل الشباب اللبناني الذي أُرغم على الهجرة أثناء الأحداث الأليمة وذاق الأمَرَّين في المَهاجِر واستفاد بشقّ النفس من التحصيل العلمي في الاغتراب، وعندما حطت الأحداث رحالها عاد إلى وطنه فأقفلت بوجهه أبواب الرزق ومُنعت عليه المساهمة في تطوير بلده وبناء دولة علمانية... فغلُب على أمره واضطر إلى الهجرة مجدّداً.
